The writing in this book was simple and easy to read. I really liked the writing style and I flew through this book. One problem I had was that the plot of the book was predictable and I wasn’t shocked at any of the reveals that were in the book. I admit there were times I was a little bored because it was too predictable but I still managed to enjoy the read overall.
I really liked the idea behind the book. I enjoyed the idea of the Red Court and I’m a sucker for secret groups! I liked that the group were something to fear. The Red Court do favours for people and take payment in favours. They can rig elections and break people up among other things. I enjoyed the Red Court and would have loved to learn more about it. I also really enjoyed the school setting and I thought the revenge plot was intriguing at first but it became predictable.
The characters were okay. The main character is Ember who wants to take down the Red Court and has to decide if she’s willing to do what it takes to take them down. I found her an okay main character, but after awhile I started to dislike her and some of the choices she made. I liked the inclusion of Gideon who is Embers gay bestfriend and I wish we had more of him. Another main character is Hayley who I liked and would have loved to learn more about. There’s a bunch of other characters too, I wish some of the characters were more developed.
There is a little romance in the book and I didn’t mind it as it takes a step back when compared to the Red Court revenge story. Overall I loved the idea behind this book more than the book itself as I just found it too predictable. I think other people will enjoy this book though and I hope they do.
