Wow! I literally finished this book in less than a day!

I don’t remember how it came recommended to me, but I was enamored from the start. I don’t remember it being marketed as YA fiction...and even if it was...it’s still a well-written book with heart.

This is the story of Fizzy Russo, a middle-schooler who loves to cook and is trying to navigate her life at a new school while managing her parents divorces and remarriages. As a counselor, I can’t help but recommend this book for any kids dealing with what Fizzy is dealing with. Payne writes Fizzy’s feelings genuinely and with depth. We are exposed to genuine and real inner thoughts as she deals with new friends and new families. It’s all so touching and REAL. None of it feels cliche or disingenuous.

The writing is so strong, it brought me back to middle school days - of just trying to navigate life as it unfolds. The moments Fizzy relunctantly shares with her counselor, Mrs. Sloan, come across as true to life. As she manages her different relationships with her step parents and parents, the reader can’t help but feel like Payne knows what she is doing.

Light and airy, but still significant and with substance, the book is so compelling and entertaining, it’s no surprise I finished it in one day.
