Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore

4.0

I have to admit, I was pretty (pleasantly) surprised by this novel!

I went into it expecting a sort of fluffy, fun romantic novel. But I came away completely moved by this story of the suffrage movement, 19th-century society, gender roles, friendship, and, yes, romance. These subjects were all carefully balanced to create a thought-provoking story that was inspiring and heartwrenching all at once.

Annabelle Archer was a protagonist I liked almost immediately from the start. She's headstrong, intelligent, a little cautious but also unafraid to do what she feels is right. Sebastian, while a bit terrifying and unpleasant off the bat, has such a deeply complicated past that I feel really added complexity to his character. Honestly, the dynamic between Annabelle and Sebastian reminded me of a 19th-century version of Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy lol.

Overall this was a fun, cute, but thoughtful story. The romance was sort of enemies-to-lovers (based on a misunderstanding, one of the best types of literary romances) and was interwoven perfectly with the political and emotional storylines. Definitely a historical romance that I'd recommend!
