Absolution Gap by Alastair Reynolds

4 for the story (lost me a bit in the middle,) 5 for the hyperpig, Scorpio. Made a seemingly out of place character quite real for me. Looking forward to finishing off the final story in Galactic North now (I'm reading the books and stories in chronological rather than publication order.)
