Crime Beat: A Decade of Covering Cops and Killers by Michael Connelly

1.0

This should be the last book you read by Michael Connelly. Do not make it the first of his books that you read, since it will probably be your last.

The book is supposed to chronicle his time covering police departments around the country. It starts off well enough in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he describes going out on calls with the homicide detectives. You get a feeling for what they are experiencing.

Things start to go very badly when he gets to Los Angeles, and covers the Sunland shootout in 1990. From this point, the book amounts to nothing more than newspaper articles that he wrote. It's particularly maddening when he has several articles covering the same crime, and you get to hear it over again, with some new details, and some left out, depending upon when he wrote the article. The Sunland incident goes on particularly long, covering the same material over and over.

If you read this book, you might never read one of his books again. Ensure that this is the last one of his that you read.
