sagittarian 's review for:
Ruling Sikthand
by Victoria Aveline
RIP ME.
cause of death: hot, brooding alien man with trust issues as long as his tail.
this is not just the best of the clecanian series (which was already fantastic), but maybe my favorite sci-fi romance i’ve read to date.
this book tackles sophia’s story, as she finds herself captive in a brutal alien city, ruled over by an even more brutal king with a bad attitude and romantic baggage the size of earth itself. sikthand holds her hostage for bargaining power with the new ruler of tremanta, but soon finds working alongside her could prove even more advantageous for his city. enter: marriage of convenience trope.
not only is this ANGSTY and delicious, it’s also got a plethora of spice and a compelling storyline replete with political scheming and betrayals that made this unputdownable. AND IT'S ALSO LITERALLY POETRY??? some of the quotes from this slayed me. SLAYED ME. the angst, the emotion, the depth. i am changed. (check out the quotes here.)
unequivocally 5 stars — sophia and sikthand are so metal and broody and edgy, it’s a refreshing change from the stories told in this universe, which tend toward softer environments and FMCs — sophia is a badass through and through, and sikthand matches her step for step.
while each of these stories are technically standalones, you might want to read at least the first book in this series (and perhaps the one prior to this — resisting maxu) for some worldbuilding context.
