Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

5.0

I listened to the audiobook version of Caleb’s Crossing, and at first the voice of the narrator (Jennifer Ehle, the actor who played Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice) seemed robotic, because she enunciated everything so clearly. But eventually I got used to it, so that it seemed perfectly natural and I enjoyed her reading.

I absolutely loved this book! It was written in the first person, from the viewpoint of Bethia, who befriends Caleb, a native American boy. Their relationship is valuable to both of them, and they learn from one another, and come to care deeply about one another. I loved both characters and I felt sad to finish the book and leave them behind. Other characters are well drawn, but these two are central to the story. Since this is set in 17th century America, there is a lot of suffering and hardship, but also moments of tenderness and joy. It will certainly make you appreciate the comforts of your life. It will also make you angry with the white Christian men who caused so many of the problems, and exacerbated others.
