Fairy Tales of Remnant (Rwby) by E.C. Myers

4.0

If you’re an avid fan of the hit RoosterTeeth animation series: RWBY, then this book is a must-read!

One of the greatest things about RWBY is the in-depth world and lore, of which we only glimpse about 20% by watching the show alone. There are trailers, World of Remnant teasers, Wiki pages, and now a few books too, all of which adds to the dynamic and creative and simply beautiful nature of the series. This book is but a single, whimsical piece of a much larger puzzle, one I am hungry to put together.

RWBY: Fairytales of Remnant is a collection of fairytales gathered over time by Ozpin and published in one place. The book’s forward says that Ozpin’s intent was to preserve some of their oral histories and beliefs, while also honoring the vastly different versions of each story that exist. It’s a fascinating concept, really, and wonderfully executed.

Each story in RWBY: Fairytales of Remnant takes the reader on a journey through Remnant, and the eyes of its inhabitants. We learn of the fables they believe regarding the moon and the Maidens, we learn how the Faunus were created and where the two gods went when they disappeared.

But more importantly, we gain insight into the fallacies that have built Remnant to what it is today, and therefore a greater understanding of the battles yet to come team RWBY’s way.

Each story has a lesson, one that the reader is left to ponder whether Remnant has learned yet, even all these years later.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it with my brother during commercials while rewatching RWBY, and we were so immersed that sometimes we’d forget to watch another episode.

Highly recommended for those ravenous RWBY fans who want to figure out all of Remnant’s secrets before they’re revealed to us. I think there are likely some hints to season 9 in this book.
