Midnight Is the Darkest Hour
by Ashley Winstead
"Above us, a flock of gulls swooped low, wings dipping to ride the wind. 'I think the only way I'll make it out of here is if I wake up one day as a bird.'
A drop of water slid across his forehead and fell into his lashes. He blinked it away. 'A scarlet Ruth-bird.'
'If I was a bird, what would you be?'
'Whatever hawk eats birds.'
A laugh burst from me. "What?"
He grinned. After the water and the sun, his lips were watermelon-red. 'To keep the other birds away.'"

I did not expect to like this book so much! The friendship between Ever and Ruth is so precious. Despite their abusing families, they managed to build the most beautiful friendship, always looking out for each other. The setting was definitely the kind I enjoy in a thriller/mystery novel: small religious town in the middle of Louisiana's swamps with a potential cult lurking in the forest. I am only removing one star because the plot was not surprising once the pieces were laid out, but if you are looking for a summer read, I invite you to read it. The ending has me in a chokehold.
Ruth and Everett are my new favorite Bonnie and Clyde <3
P.S. yes, I felt second hand embarassement in one chapter but looking back, I cannot blame Ruth!
