The Bunker Diary
by Kevin Brooks
Jaysus. Zero stars. I really wish I hadn't read this book. I was excited about the premise - Cube for the younger set. And it's definitely disturbing - those wishing to be traumatized won't be disappointed. But it's just truly horrible. I'm glad I didn't read it as a teenager and sorry I read it as an adult. I picked this up because I'm making my way through the Sakura medal books. This one also won the Carnegie medal which I find rather shocking. I'm a fan of allowing kids to read shocking books and I wouldn't pull this from the shelves but I just don't see the point. I don't see what anyone would get out of this one besides a stomach ache. House of Stairs by William Sleator is a much better choice for anyone who gravitates towards this type of psychological horror but also enjoys narrative arcs that actually go somewhere.
