This was adorable! Tahereh's writing shines in this type of story. It is so whimsical and I cannot help but love little Alice. I loved the magic system having to do with color, which made this story so picturesque. I liked how the story is told about Alice by a narrator. I'm convinced Tahereh Mafi can write anything!
Even though it is not as described, I kept picturing Alice and Oliver as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider because that is what the characters reminded me of personality-wise, not looks-wise. Alice is so innocent and sweet and Oliver is a little arrogant but actually so kind. The way it is written, I imagined it as Disney-style animation.
This is probably more upper middle grade (Alice is twelve) and is such an adventure, I certainly think teens could enjoy it as well. There are some good lessons in the story, the main being Alice learning to accept and love what makes her different, and another being Oliver learning the value of being truthful.
I am in my mid-twenties and enjoyed this very much and would highly recommend to everyone. It's very cute and magical and reads much like a fairy tale and ends on a happily ever after.
