"As the hours crept by, the afternoon sunlight bleached all the books on the shelves to pale, gilded versions of themselves and warmed the paper and ink inside the covers so that the smell of unread words hung in the air."

It's been almost a decade since I first read this and I thought I might not enjoy it as much. It isn't my usual style of story with much of the focus on romance and the shapeshifting aspect, but I loved it just as much as ever.

Maggie has a beautiful way with words and it brings the characters and scenes to life in the perfect way. Her stories are really character studies, showing us how people become who they are and how they fit together. A beautiful story and one I think will always sit on my shelf of favorites.
