I honestly feel like this is an underrated part of the Wayward Children series. Sure, it doesn't connect very well with the rest of the series and sure, if you're not a fan of horses it does seem oversaturated with them, however it is an incredibly important book in terms of representation. Regan is the first intersex character I've read about in a book and that is a crying shame. On top of that the adventure Regan goes on is just generally amazing, her found family with the centaurs is adorable and the world building is genuinely really cool. I also liked that Regan had a perfectly happy home life and went on this adventure anyway, I feel like most of the time the kids leave their homes because they're unhappy but she just needed a chance to grow on her own, away from the toxic environment she was stuck in. And honestly, I liked the horse world, I think it's pretty cool.
