A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby by Vanessa Riley
4.0

In this story, we meet Lady Patience Jordan, a Caribbean heiress from Demerara who is recently widowed. She’s been exiled from her home and separated from her newborn baby by her husband’s horrible uncle. After a few months of sneaking back into Hamlin Hall each night to see her son, Lionel, Duke Busick Strathmore steps on the scene to care for him and steward the estate until he’s of age. Patience and Busick have some rocky first encounters but over time they come to fall for each other despite the shadows of the past.

I loved this book! I really appreciate that both Patience and Busick were survivors; they’ve overcome war, heartbreak, homesickness and betrayal. In light of that, they grew to develop a shared respect for each other which grows into love. The duke’s affection towards Lionel was so beautiful to read about. He took on the responsibility of raising Lionel with sincerity and care.

Patience was an amazing heroine and it was easy to root for her. She was not perfect and didn’t always make the right decision but her motives were pure. Her friendship with Mrs. St Maur was endearing and I really enjoyed seeing these women work together to improve the other’s circumstances. Riley does a great job with writing dialogue that is sharp, hilarious and heart warming! There was true suspense here as well; the last fifty pages were flying as the plot raced to the finish!

This is the first book in a series so you already know I’ll be continuing my Vanessa Riley collection.
