Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
3.0

This is the first slave narrative that I have read and it was powerful.

There were certain lines in this narrative that were more powerful than others. I think that the saddest thing for me was when Northup was describing the masters as good masters. But, at the end of the day, they are still masters. This book gave me a lot more insight into slavery. They teach you some things about it in school, but they never went into specific details. But, in Northup's novel, he goes into detail about what he did for 12 years, the awful living conditions and everything else. This is a book that everyone should have to read in schools because it is powerful and it is eye-opening and it is so important.

I look forward to reading more narratives in the future about slavery! If you are thinking of reading this book, don't think. Go out, and get it and sit down and read it.
