The Reader on the 6.27
by Jean-Paul Didierlaurent
Translated from the French and rather poetic at times, this is a story about stories and the power they have in our lives. Guylain hates his job operating a pulping machine that destroys old books, but finds that words have the power to change so much. There are so many well written passages in this little book that absorb the reader as they do the characters in the book itself. The ending, with its signal of hope and subtle change of point of view is brief yet strangely satisfying. It invites reflection on the nature of work and stories to shape us and our world. A great little read.
