This Will Only Hurt a Little
by Busy Philipps
Got this on ebook from the library as a fluffy break in between heavier book club books. Appreciate her very honest and unedited voice, and her ability to portray herself warts and all. And she definitely has warts - she doesn’t hide her privilege, her mental health issues, her various bouts of self-destructive or self-sacrificing behavior. There’s a bit of name dropping and behind the scenes storytelling that celeb fans will enjoy.
I can’t help but wonder why she wanted to write this other than her self-stated desire for attention (and money, obviously). She comes across as sympathetic, but definitely will be the subject of judgment by many because she’s not conventional. And there’s no higher meaning revealed or anything, so I’d be curious to read more interviews with her to find out what she hoped people would get from the book.
