The Clockwork Dynasty by Daniel H. Wilson

4.0

An old man once caught his granddaughter in an act of satisfying her childish curiosity, while she was stumbling through the old man's possessions. In stead of scolding the little girl, he told him the story of his experience , the story of encountering an angel of vengeance at Stalingrad during the world war 2. And trusted the girl with an abandoned relic which would later reveal itself as an anima that is the soul of an avtomat, a clockwork creature that once ruled the civilization of men and other clockwork creatures.

The story that the grandfather told the girl, is merely a small incident in a chain of events that spans throughout the course of history. Having its roots deep into an event that occurred 5000 years ago, yet the actual source lost in the antiquities of time.

June, the little girl grows up, with only one dream in her mind. That is to know enough to understand the secrets of the anima and learn about the world of the avtomats. The story runs parallelly in the present and in the past. June's quest of finding the secrets has led her to a point where she meets Peter, the same Peter who was found by tsar Pyotr Alexeyevich and rebuilt in his own image. And soon after June discovers the raging war between the avtomats and is dragged into it.

The story unravels itself as things continue to happen with June. June's quest is narrated from her own perspective while Peter's story of growing and blending in with the human civilization, his time with her avtomat sister Elena and their struggles continues in the backdrop.

Slowly and quite intriguingly the stories of the past and present escalates. At times the story of the past moves backwards in time before the dawn of civilization of men, and yanking the threads again back to the future, which is June's present, effortlessly. And at the climax, the stories merge to reveal a greater picture and a message.

The quest for protecting an anima, serving the words by which the avtomat live by and the quest of blending and evolving with the human civilization leads to a greater narrative for the central figures.

A truly intriguing novel, with a slight blend of fantastic elements along with the classic steampunk flavor, The Clockwork Dynasty is a novel that can keep you engrossed and give some mini goosebumps as well. An enjoyable reading experience inldeed.
