Broken Dove by Kristen Ashley

3.0

A dove has great beauty, but is easily broken.

Broken Dove was a book that I was anticipating like crazy. First, you have sad widower Apollo. Second, Apollo has kids and if you've read a Kristen Ashley novel, romance + kids + a step-parent=EVERYTHING. Third, this is Fantasyland and anything can happen. The trappings were there for epic times....but it fell just a little flat. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy this installment because I did but I did have a few issues that prevented me from rating it higher.

I have vowed to keep you safe, to make it so you never feel fear again, to give you better, and here I stand, with you so close but still holding yourself away, because it was me who failed at giving you all those things.

The biggest issue for me was Ilsa/Madeline and I hate that! I really thought considering her backstory (her Apollo from her world was an abusive jerk!) and the deal with Apollo and his kids that this would easily be 5 stars but she was sort of boring in comparison to the other heroines. Finnie was sassy, Circe was brave, Cora was endearing, and Madeline I just could never connect with. And I don't think that's a reflection of the writing as much as I just didn't find what I wanted in her story. I mean Madeline with her past and her future can easily be described as all of those qualities the other ladies had, I just had a hard time feeling more than just lukewarm to her story and her character arc.

It is my responsibility as the man who loves you and wants you to be his wife to mend what’s broken in you … I’ll not forget again that I must treat you with care.

But there was still plenty of this story that I enjoyed. Like the sexy times between Maddie and Apollo. They even do
Spoilerbutt stuff :) :) :)
even Dax and Circe didn't do that! I also loved the fact that we got to see all three couples together. There was a lot in terms of storyline that takes place in this book but I loved it. Even though this wasn't my favorite it was still a great story, and I am chomping at the bit for Midnight Soul. I have no idea how I am going to feel about Franka (cause every time she's been around has been less than pleasant) but Kristen Ashley is writing it, so that should mean I'm in for a fun, sexy, and wild ride!

3.5 stars
