Winter Counts
by David Heska Wanbli Weiden
CW: Violence, Murder, Torture, and Drug use. This story has elements of identity, justice, and family. Virgil Wounded Horse punishes those who cause harm, and is soon brought into the world of drug cartels when his nephew Nathan is impacted by drug use. This story is crime fiction that also highlights and recognizes that the American Legal System does not often support or help Native Americans living on reservations. The work highlights the complications of not being “native enough” and also trying to find your place in the world, and embracing your community.
