Doll Bones by Holly Black
5.0

I'm not much for middle grade fiction, and I'm especially not fond of current middle grade fiction. It feels like authors are trying their hardest to push the boundaries of how much inappropriate content can and cannot be published for children.

Doll Bones was a breath of fresh air. It never tried to be anything age inappropriate. The characters are fleshed out to perfection, and their back stories are at times heartbreaking. The book as a whole was intelligent without being unnecessarily wordy or too complicated for a child to read. And yet it had a magic within it that kept me reading long into the night. The children all have an unmistakable bond of friendship that will bring you back to your own days as a child and fill you with joy.

And heads up for all of you that like to read at night. This book is at times creepy beyond belief. I have a terrible fear of porcelain dolls, and this book is about a possessed one.

Even if you don't like middle grade fiction, I highly suggest you give this one a shot!
