Love Like Poison by Charmaine Pauls

4.0

Wow! This series starts with an unexpected bang, and I am here for it! Love Like Poison is my first read from Charmaine Pauls and won't be the last. Readers are introduced to Sabella and Angelo, two teens on opposite sides of the mafia's underground crime world.

Sabella is innocent, forced to be used as a tool against her family. Angelo sees her beauty immediately upon meeting her, and the two are leveraged as options for marriage between the two families. Sabella's father broke the promise of marriage, causing Angelo and Sabella to part ways, but not before Angelo could enact a revenge plan. Once Sabella turns 18, Angelo's plan is in motion, and Sabella is caught in the middle of a war filled with manipulation, betrayal, violence, and darkness.

Even though most of the story revolves around Sabella's age from 16-18 - this is not a young adult story. It is dark, gritty, and spicy! Angelo is dark, brooding, arrogant, and so obsessed with having the woman he's always desired it's hard not to root for him. Their relationship was filled with a toxic 'poison' fueled by anger between their families, Angelo's anger toward her father, and Sabella's darkened innocence. The story has a well-developed plot, and I was pleasantly surprised by this modern retelling of Romeo & Juliet. Given that it's the first of the series - an epic cliffhanger is bound to happen! I am so ready for the next book!!
