An incredibly written, protracted character piece. How Salinger manages to create so thoroughly flawed but still ultimately sympathetic leads here is astounding. The dialogue is in turns snappy (though never precocious) and thoughtful, the details in both the home's direly nostalgic state and this family's unconscious behaviors make everyone feel all the more real, all the more impactful. Lots to chew on with the theological discussions, as well.
