Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher

3.0

Given that Fisher just died recently, I decided to pick up this book of hers which was on display at my public library. I have read tidbits about her life and her parents' lives, but here she writes in a stand-up comic manner about her life.

She's had a lot of drama in her life. Her parents divorced when Carrie was young, and they went on to marry several other people. Carrie had bipolar disorder, but she didn't get an accurate diagnosis for years. Substance abuse, compulsive spending and sexual promiscuity are hallmarks of the disease, so she experienced decades of highs and lows.

She gives you the gory details with a tone of detached sarcasm. I guess you laugh or you cry. She is a survivor, and she's done a lot to help destigmatize mental illness.

I hope that she is now enjoying a realm filled with peace and love after all that she's been through.
