Dreams of Gods & Monsters by Laini Taylor
4.0

I'm finally rating and reviewing this. I had to sit with this for awhile to wrap my head around how I feel. I keep going back and forth between a 3 and 4 rating on this. Because of my love for this series as a whole and Laini Taylor's writing I settled on 4.

There were two main issues I had with this book.

1) The LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG drawn out reunion between Akiva and Karou. All I kept thinking is that they must have the worst case of blue balls. It was almost like Laini was intentionally torturing us. She knew how much we wanted that moment and she was prolonging it for as much as possible.

2) A whole new set of characters whose only purpose seemed to be a setup for a spin-off series. Seriously! The sad thing is that I probably would have liked that storyline if it hadn't taken away from the main story that I had spent two books reading about and wanted to continue to read about.

Those two things knocked a star off (and probably should've knocked two off). The writing was still beautiful. None of my favorite characters let me down. And Mik and Zuzana were still their adorable, ferocious, loyal, and loving selves. I mean they are the definition of a quirky yet healthy relationship.

Overall I was disappointed with the book but I think it's because my expectations were so unattainably (is that even a word) high. In spite of this Laini Taylor is still one of my favorite authors and this is still one of my favorite series of all time.
