Dark Lover
by J.R. Ward
Dark Lover is the first book in the well-known long-running Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward. I’ve wanted to read this series for a while having been a huge fan of supernatural romance in my teens and early adulthood, so I was excited to see this was being re-published.
This book was an easy to read, fun-filled urban fantasy romance which will appeal to people who enjoy authors such as Christine Feehan or Sherrilyn Kenyon. There are plenty of books to read in the series and I love the idea of each book focusing on a different character who you have already met. This book introduces the 6 main members of the Black Dagger Brotherhood and I quite liked the unique spellings of the names (e.g. Torhment, Rhage, Zsadist).
The romance was cheesy and over the top, the men about as alpha as you can get. If you like your romance insta-love and steamy then this one is for you.
Overall, this was an enjoyable, easy-to-read story that I finished in one sitting. It didn’t inspire me to immediately jump into the next book in the series but I will definitely keep this author on my radar and will likely go back at some point and continue reading the others.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
