Ella Baker and the Black Freedom Movement: A Radical Democratic Vision by Barbara Ransby
5.0
Read this as part of my ongoing effort to be an educated ally. Not long ago, someone complained to me about the push to teach "1619" curriculum, and I wish I could have responded with "Have you ever heard of Ella Baker? Because she and all of her history was left out when I was in school." This book helped fill in some big gaps, and has inspired me to keep learning and to be part of the movement for change. (We have so much more work to do to achieve equality and equity.)
I encourage you to check out the audio version. The book is pretty dense, and I found it hard to keep my focus. I switched to the audio narrated by Lisa Renee Pitts, who brings to life Ms. Baker's passion and influence. It runs over 21 hours, so it's a commitment--and so worth the effort.
