Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond

5.0

This book highlights the devastating circumstances that surround living in poverty (with a particular focus on housing). It’s very informative and eye opening to the struggles people face in poverty and all the multiple intersections of these struggles (ie. race, mental health, environment, etc.) and how they’re multifaceted. I particularly liked the section at the end where the author describes his experience while collecting the stories for the book, because it highlights the privilege he has as a white, middle-class, and educated individual interacting with the people he writes about in the book. He’s fully aware of it and I think it brings to light my own privilege as someone considered middle-class. It puts into perspective that poverty isn’t such an easy fix, and that these are real people with interesting lives, loved ones, and personalities that are dealing with these issues.
