The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
by David Wroblewski
There were parts of this book that really intrigued me, but for the most part I felt it didn't live up to the huge amount of praise that Oprah gave to it on her show. To paraphrase her, I believe she said it was the next great American novel or something along those lines.
While I agree that the writing was beautiful, I also felt that the beauty of the writing kept me from seeing what was happening in the story. There was too much implicitness and not enough obviousness for me. I love literary devices like symbolism, metaphor, allusion, etc. just as much as the next guy, but I like stories to have an even balance of obvious and implicitness and I felt like this book was too far on edge of, "Wait a minute, what just happened here?" for my liking.
