Platform Seven by Louise Doughty
3.0

Platform Seven is a unique mystery, part ghost story and part slow-burn thriller set at Peterborough station.

The narrator, Lisa, is a ghost, which makes for an interesting narrative twist that Doughty uses to great effect; Lisa's perspective offers us a unique depth of insight without undermining the central mystery. A sense of her sorrow and foreboding haunts the story. The opening chapters, filled with her people watching observations at the station as she slowly regains consciousness, are particularly strong.

The narrative unravels slightly as Lisa starts to remember her past. The plotting becomes disjointed and is oddly paced in places. There are also a few instances of stilted conversation, which make a jarring contrast to the eloquent descriptions of the first few chapters. But the mystery keeps Platform Seven a compelling read, and Doughty never drops the suspense until the dramatic conclusion.

Platform Seven is an original piece of crime fiction, and despite its inconsistencies, it makes for a perturbing and unsettling read.
