I wanted to love this book because the themes are interesting to me. However, I found very little redeemable about most of the characters and the plots were punishing, leaving very little to encourage me as a reader. Oh, this person I don’t like is going to have something terrible happen to them at the hands of another person I don’t like? Cool.
The titular story was an absolute slog- so little story with paragraphs upon paragraphs filled with old-timey lumberjack jargon. It was so hard to get through.
I stuck with it because I bought the book, but it was bleak…and not in a good way.
