Geoff Johns has turned what used to be a literal moustache twirling villain into a complex anti-hero. Sinestro is a flawed sometimes sadistic man who wants to protect innocents at all costs although at first that ment harsh authoritarianism. Though he tries to hide it he and Hal have many of the same faults and doubts, Hal however by the end has moved past these and no longer wants to be a lantern. This book shows the flawed and sometimes sadistic nature of law enforcement, comparing the semi-fascist yellow lanterns with the more familiar police structure employed by the unfeeling guardians showing they are no different from each other.
