The novel itself is simple, charming, and utterly heartwarming.
What the themes of the story say to me about human nature is more complicated.
On one hand, I’m so happy for James and Bob having found each other and started making their way in the world together, but on the other I struggle to reconcile with the way people instantly and effortlessly empathized with a hungry and homeless animal while just as easily ignoring or even despising the homeless and hungry man sitting right next to him, as if we as a species automatically consider one innocent and helpless of their circumstances, but somehow believe that the other must have done something wrong or somehow deserves to be where they’ve ended up.
So many times people gave money expressly, “for Bob.” People gave James cat food and cat clothes and cat toys, which is wonderful and obviously he was thrilled to have it because he loves the cat, but then I wonder sadly if any of those same people also gave James something to eat or money expressly for his needs. If they ever did, it wasn’t mentioned.
