The Guardian
by Nicholas Sparks
This book is a little darker in subject matter than previous novels I read by him.
Julie husband dies early in their marriage and she is devastated by grief and life without him.
He left an unexpected gift for her, a dog to help her to live again. With his blessing via his last note to her she decides it is time to date again. Richard seems to be the perfect gentlemen, very attentive, special dates, and unique gifts. Only issue is she doesn't feel anything about him and his kiss leaves her wondering if the spark is gone for love forever.
In the meantime Mike her late husband's best friend remains in the shadow of Julie life and refuses to confess his feelings for her. After a funny evening fixing a broken water faucet she realizes she is very comfortable around Mike and after some guilt about her husband they begin a relationship.
Other problem is Richard is obsessed with Julie and won't go away. I had to remember this was wrote in 2005 when police looked at stalking cases differently. Also advances in technology we have now, wasnt available then especially social media.
This became a heart pounding read as I couldnt figure out what Richard would do next and Julie fear jumped off the pages. It all comes to a head when he physically attacks Julie and Singer the dog comes to her rescue.
The aftermath of this terror resounded off the pages. It would be a 5 star read except I don't like what happened to one character. It mad me mad.
