I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars! Not only did it have wonderfully loveable characters that were fantastical but still felt brilliantly human, but it also held its moral at its core without ever beating the reader over the head with it. And therefore it came through even more passionately. It doesn’t hurt that the book is fundamentally about how love and hope triumph over sorrow—something I think the world is in need of a reminder about—and even though that message isn’t new the book made it feel new. I felt the message creeping up as the book continued. Until it shone through and inevitably had me sobbing. Plus I never felt the fantasy elements were strange or just a vehicle for the message. The world building was subtle but thorough and enriched the narrative.
Side note: the voice actor/narrator was amazing (and also deserves 5 stars), so I highly recommend the audiobook.
