Untold by Sarah Rees Brennan
3.5

Good but not great. This book is sort of the classic second in a series, with an expanded selection of POV characters, more world building, more character development, and enough plot advancement to set things up for the final book. It's predictable and there is little action until the end. The tension between our main love interests resolves and things look good for a while, until the end of the book, which is classic in this type of story. It's just things we have all seen a million times. There is even a line repeated almost exactly from one of the Song of Ice and Fire books. So yeah, this is largely an amalgamation of a bunch of preexisting stories.

That's not necessarily a bad thing if the author does a good job in other areas, which Brennan does. The characters are the draw here once again. The drama between characters feels real and it makes sense why they are in conflict. Things are resolved gradually and the resolution feels earned. There are internal struggles being fought as well and we get a lot more development for Kami's friends and family.

Speaking of family, a lot of family conflict is introduced in this book and it also feels organic and true to the story being told. It helps advance the plot and give us more information about the characters in a natural way.

So overall, not as good as the first book but good enough for me to want to finish the series.
