Black Water Sister by Zen Cho

4.0

This story blended old lore and a very modern plot and I loved it. The juxtaposition of tradition and change is reflected in the main plot and paralleled in the MC's personal journey. This really led itself to examine ideas of finding one's place. Besides that, the plot was super compelling and kept me engaged throughout.

Bullet review:
- Sense of belonging
- Identity and queerness
- Ghosts and gods
- Mafia mystery vibes
- Malaysian lore
- Family themes

It's funny how Zen Cho, much like Silvia Moreno-Garcìa, comes up with incredibly different stories for each book. Perhaps this wideness of range while retaining a distinctive voice is why I love them so much!
