Wow! I don't think I've been so thoroughly engrossed in a thriller like I was with First Lie Wins. I will caveat my review with the following: (1) I don't often read thrillers because I forever expect to be chronically disappointed; and (2) I don't mind leaning into a little bit of camp or blowing past a little bit of absurdity so long as I'm enjoying the overall plot and story being told. If you need every plothole tied up in a nice, logical bow, this might not be for you.
Nevertheless, the pace and trajectory are well-managed. The character development is satisfying. The mystery, intrigue, and twists are well-spaced and executed with little hiccup. Most importantly, this book delivers on what it means to be "thrilling."
To be clear, I reserve rating books 5*s only if they fundamentally rewire my brain, and I can't say this book accomplished that. But it was an enjoyable read, I would read it again and recommend it to others, and I think it would make for a great limited series or movie. I listened to this in audiobook format and was able to follow along even when the story flipped back and forth between timelines.
