This One Summer
by Mariko Tamaki
Some stunning spreads in this book. The Tamakis' storytelling is amazing. It calls to mind When Marnie Was There, a Studio Ghibli film also about a girl's adventures and subsequent growth over the summer. The plot is raw and thick with teenage angst. The frankness of the dialogue and familial tension lent some reality to the narrative and on the whole it was refreshing. I read it in one go but I need to go back and spend some time with the gorgeous textures and landscapes. One of my favorite graphic novels of the year.
