That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis
3.0

This book had so many things going on in it that its hard to write a review. That Hideous Strength is the final book in the science fiction trilogy following Elwin Random. While involved he is not the main character. The protagonists are Jane and Mark Studdock who must resist the forces of evil in the form of the organization N.I.C.E.

Just so all LOTR fans know, C.S. Lewis ties this book in with Numinor which helps me like the book immensely. That said I do not like this book near as much as I did the previous ones. Lewis devotes an enormous amount of this book to arguing philosophy and I thought it was overdone. While Mark Studdock and his engagement with the N.I.C.E. organization was well developed, Jane and their marriage, which I considered a major part of the driver of the outcome, to need more. Especially later in the book her character needs more to make me care about her. As with the previous books, it is Christian allegory but it was much less obvious with a great deal of Arthurian legend and mythology thrown in. I really felt Lewis was just trying to do too much with this book.

I won't give away the ending, but I will say that I found it not as satisfying as I had hoped and raising far more questions than was answered.
