I picked this up from the library purely because the cover called to me and when I read the blurb I couldn't resist it. The premise for this story sounded so good and it absolutely is. The concept of two trips into a mysterious woodland hundreds of years apart are both fates and maybe connected is a great one for a story.

Sadly this book falls short of delivering on that promise.

I think the biggest issue is we never really get to know the women and so they are just names in a book rather characters we can connect with. That does change a bit with Nuria and Alice but only in the last third of the story and then mostly we it is Alice who is slowly revealed to us but it also feels too little too late to create any depth of character or connection.

The soldiers felt more fleshed out but even they were hard to distinguish between and mostly they too were names on a page.

It is rare that I say a book is too short, mostly authors make the mistake of waffling on and on but this book is too short. We need more character development, more build up to the event to allow us to invest in these women and understand them so that when faced with the horrors of the woods we understand better the decisions they make.

I will definitely keep and eye out for more by this author as this story was a great idea with real potential is just needs, well, more!
