A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow

3.0

A Song Below Water was very much sold to me as a siren based fantasy with black main characters, yay! It is actually a ya contemporary taking on very important themes such as race, sisterhood, and discrimination with a side plot of sirens and other creatures. Morrow perfectly describes the struggles black people face in this country with these fictional creatures and I did love the symbolism. Did I enjoy commentary Morrow provides with this story? Absolutely, it’s just not what I signed up for when I started this book. I just wished she would have made both the themes and the fantasy plot a priority instead of just the themes. The book did tend to drag at parts. I don’t know if it was because of Morrow’s writing or the very long chapters. I also found myself to be confused by what was going on in the book where I don’t think I was supposed to be. Still at the end of the day the book was entertaining, but I expected more of the siren based fantasy that I was marketed, that’s all.
