Concrete Rose

I loved learning about Maverick, Lisa, and King in this prequel to The Hate U Give. Set in Garden Heights in the '90s, you learn what shapes Starr's parents and the gang leader King. The language is rough, but it is also authentic and appropriate in the setting. My heart was breaking for Maverick even though he screwed up on several occasions. He wanted to do what was right, not just what was easy. A heartfelt and authentic look into a world I will never be apart of. Ultimately the book is about choices, responsibility, revenge, and loyalty to family and community.
