The Lie in Our Marriage by Anna-Lou Weatherley
5.0

I listened to this on Audible because it was free with my subscription. Since it was free, I wasn't sure if I should expect much, but I actually found it really enjoyable. I would probably recommend it to any adult who wants a fun, interesting, mystery/thriller read. I say adult (or maybe older teen) because although it was actually pretty clean, there's a bit more language and more adult themes than I'd recommend for kids, even if their reading level was high enough.

I liked that the emotions and even most of the dialogue felt realistic, and that most of the characters had depth beyond the initial introduction about who they were. The asides giving added details about each character really added to the immersive feeling - as did the way the chapters themselves were written in terms of perspective and tense.

I will say that I found the beginning of the story a tiny bit slow. Setting everything up took a moment, and it was a little bit longer than I expected before the real action and mystery amped up. In a way though, this let me feel Maggie's tension to a greater extent as things progressed. The way everything began so seemingly slowly, full of plausible explanations and freely explaining away tiny details here and there, really made it extra insane feeling when everything began to snowball as the plot thickened.

I did predict the ending, but I appreciated that. To me, it wasn't Hallmark-movie predictable, but rather the type of pleasantly predictable where you can feel accomplished for having solved the case, instead of being disappointed it was so simple or annoyed there was no way you could've anticipated the resolution.

I'll be recommending this to my best friend, and I've already been updating my husband on each twist and turn of the story. It's a pretty good read! Now that I see it's apparently part of a series, I may look into reading others.
