I read this book when it came out in 1977--part of a summer reading assignment the summer before I took Advanced Placement English. I loved it then. Recently, I thought of it again, and decided to give it another go; it holds up extremely well. It's a melodramatic story, but the characters are engaging and the story is one of those which really sticks with you. I have never read any other of McCullough's work, but maybe I ought to give some of it a go.
