Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth
4.0

I was lucky enough to recive and advanced reader copy of Veronica Roth's Divergent in early 2011 and have followed her with great expectation ever since, so it was with a grin on my face I opened my box to find Carve The Mark. I will say it did not disappoint. In fact it is a stronger story and better writing than we saw in the Divergent Series. When an author debuts to such acclaim one always wonders if they will be able to follow it up, Roth has done that and more.

Carve the Mark, while taking place in a different universe, has the feel of historical fiction, the societies and customs of the two peoples are balanced and authentic. The tribal feel of the peoples on Thuvhe mixed with space age technology and ships creates a fresh backdrop for a story as old as time. What happens when a boy and a girl from rival factions meet and fall in love has been told so many times that it often is predictable and boring but Roth keeps it feeling fresh with flawed characters who know their worth if not their value.
If Carve the Mark is any example of Roth's growth as a writer she is well on her way to being a long-term favorite.
