The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline

5.0

First off, this book is NOT for everyone and is not one I recommend.

It is dark. Really dark. There is a lot of abuse towards characters, including children, and the entire premise is based on hunting down Indigenous people.

That being said, I genuinely was moved by this book. There is such a wonderful theme at its heart about family and community during horrific times. All the characters are so distinct and I love that, despite the large group of characters and short page amount, there was time given to so many of them and their stories. There was also a clear contrast between older members of their group who knew how to react to situations with wisdom that only comes from them being adults compared to the kids.

I also thought the world building was done really well. It is set in our future and I appreciated that time was taken to show the line between our present day and their world.

It was such a devastating story that broke my heart and I cried about 5 times. I would not recommend this to everyone and advise anyone who is interested to check the trigger warnings because I was not prepared.
