A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

5.0

I offer no justification for my rating of this series, because no reasonable defense can be given. This series occupies a strange position in my life. Do I actually enjoy it as much as my all 5 stars indicate? Probably not. However, that isn't really relevant because as with many of my most enjoyed books it transcends these concerns. I'm not a hardcore fan by any means of anything, but there's just something about these books fulfills almost everything that I could possibly want from this specific ideal. When I first read these I thought that I had been missing out for my entire life and that I had started far, far, too late. Now, in retrospect, it's entirely fine when I started. In a different world, I didn't read this at all, and that's almost worth lamenting, because the opening was so weak to me. This book should rightfully be the blueprint for this sort of modern fantasy. Even if it's never finished, it will still remain of my favorite series, quite possible for life.
