senyas 's review for:
King of Scars
by Leigh Bardugo
4.5/5 stars. finally decided to read this after binging the netflix series to refresh my memory, since it's been a while since i marathoned my way through the first few books in this series. minor spoilers below with regards to the individuals involved in this book's main ship.
nikolai's chapters were a bit slow to start, but once things began to pick up, it was a delightful read. i do agree that his romance with zoya felt a bit forced—my main complaint here is how there was far too much telling in the narration to make this seem like a pre-established relationship. perhaps something that would've worked if this was the first book of a standalone series, but when the characters involved have been known to us since the very beginning, it was quite sudden. don't get me wrong, i loved the eventual dynamic between them, but the lead-up could have been done a bit better.
"i will put a bullet in your brain before i let that happen, nikolai."
"my ruthless zoya, i'll load the gun myself."
zoya and nina were the stars of the show for me—both of their arcs were gripping and gritty, especially the darker twists that were explored with nina's arc. the speed with which zoya felt too fast and too easy, though, so that'd be my other minor gripe with this.
overall, another wonderful addition to the grishaverse. i'm with the group who wasn't a huge fan of the 'end,' but only subtracted a half star for that as the rest of the book hooked me from start to finish.
