Hard to Be a God by Boris Strugatsky, Arkady Strugatsky

3.0

Lord Rumata is an imposter. He is actually a man from a faraway planet called Earth, sent to study a feudal society. Along with a few others from Earth he tries to nudge this planet out of the depravity of it's dark ages. Being from the paradisaical Earth, he finds that he is unprepared for the harsh and violent reality of a medieval planet. Reading about it is not the same as living it.

I found the prose difficult to follow at times. The third person narrative sometimes jumps unexpectedly into the first person thoughts of Rumata. I'm not sure if this the author's style or a bad translation from Russian.
